Always take the long way home

Ten extra kilometres has never once been the thing I regretted.

19 AUG 2025·1 MIN READ·173 WORDS

Placeholder copy — short piece, in the right voice.

The commute is eleven kilometres and there is a version of it that takes twenty-two. The long version goes out along the river and comes back over one unnecessary hill, and I have never once arrived home and wished I had taken the short one.

What the long way is for

Not fitness, mostly. It is the only reliable hour in the week where nothing can be asked of me and there is no screen involved.

  • No headphones
  • No computer, no numbers to look at afterwards
  • One bakery stop, if the timing works
  • Home before the light goes, in theory

The hobby with no version control. Nothing here is measured in commits.

The exception

Rain does not count as a reason. Rain from the side, in February, in the dark, counts as a reason. I have made my peace with the difference.
